PDF Keyword Finder: Step-by-Step Guide

Search for words or phrases in a PDF online for free. Find keyword matches by page, use case sensitivity, and export a CSV report. No paid PDF API needed.

Some optional accessories below are affiliate links. They are never required to use this free PDF tool.

How to Search a Keyword in a PDF

Upload a document, type the word or phrase you need, optionally select case-sensitive or whole-word matching, and click Find PDF Keywords. Results show the number of occurrences on each matching page. Download the report as a CSV file for later reference.

Finding Words Across a Long PDF

Searches are performed page by page against text extracted by the PDF reader. This makes it easy to locate repeated terms in manuals, research articles, contracts and reports without scrolling through every page. The result table includes a short preview of extracted text from each matching page and the page number.

Case Sensitivity and Whole-Word Search

Case-sensitive search distinguishes terms such as CEO and ceo. Whole-word matching attempts to avoid counting a shorter search term inside a longer word. This uses text boundaries and can behave differently with punctuation, hyphenation, unusual Unicode scripts and PDF line breaks.

Why Some PDF Keywords Are Not Found

Some PDFs are scanned photographs with no text layer. Other files store individual letters, ligatures, special encodings or reading order irregularities that do not extract exactly as they appear onscreen. OCR can create searchable text for image-only pages. For legally significant research, verify important matches manually.

Keyword Counts and Search Reports

The report summarizes occurrences per page; it does not judge meaning, sentiment, relevance or whether a word is part of a quoted or negated statement. Download the CSV to organize your results in a spreadsheet, and revisit the original PDF for context before making decisions.

Keeping PDF Documents Private

The document is processed locally with an open-source PDF reader. No paid API key or server-side PDF processing account is necessary. Large documents are limited to help avoid slowing down your computer, and complex encrypted files may not be readable.

For a full text dump use PDF to Text, and for scans try OCR PDF. The PDF Word Counter estimates total words, while PDF Reader helps verify findings in their original layout.
