PDF Font Inspector: Step-by-Step Guide

Find fonts used in selectable PDF text online for free. Inspect font identifiers page by page and export a PDF font report to CSV or JSON, without an API key.

How to Identify Fonts Used in a PDF

Upload a PDF document and click Inspect PDF Fonts. The tool uses the PDF rendering library to examine fonts referenced by selectable text on each page. Results include page numbers and available font identifiers, and can be exported as a CSV spreadsheet or structured JSON.

Why PDF Font Names Look Different

A PDF can embed a subset of a font rather than the full original font. Internal font names may include prefixes, substitutions or generated identifiers and can differ from a friendly brand name shown in design software. The inspector reports the information exposed by the PDF reader instead of guessing an exact commercial font.

Embedded, Subset and Missing Fonts

A font may be embedded fully, embedded as a subset, or substituted by the viewer. Not every viewer exposes enough metadata to prove licensing or complete embedding. Use specialist preflight software for production printing and font compliance checks. This page is an inspection aid, not a printer certification report.

Which PDFs Can Be Inspected?

Text-based PDFs created from document editors, presentations and layout applications are usually better candidates than photographed or scanned pages. A page containing only an image has no selectable text font information to inspect. Running optical character recognition can introduce new overlay fonts without revealing the font used in the original photograph.

Using a Font Report Before Editing

When replacing or adding text, a font report can show common font identifiers across pages. Still review the document visually to match weight, kerning and typography. Different fonts with similar names can render differently, especially for accented languages or special symbols.

Safe Browser-Based PDF Font Inspection

The PDF file is read on your device after the free PDF JavaScript library loads. You do not need to register or purchase API credits. The tool caps very large documents to protect browser memory. If you need exact font file extraction or forensic metadata, use dedicated desktop software.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I find which fonts a PDF uses?

Yes, when fonts are referenced by selectable PDF text and the rendering library can inspect them.

Can this identify the exact font in a scanned image?

No. Images of text do not contain the original font resource information.

Does this guarantee fonts are fully embedded?

No. A dedicated PDF preflight audit is needed for printing and embedding compliance.

Can I export the font list?

Yes. Download a page-by-page CSV or JSON report.

Does inspection need an API key?

No. The inspection runs in your browser using a free PDF library.
