How to Import JSON Data into PDF Forms

Choose a PDF containing standard interactive fields and a JSON file exported from the PDF Form Data Extractor. You can also paste JSON directly into the text area. Click Import Form Data, review updated and skipped field counts, and download the completed PDF. Always open the final document to verify that checkboxes and choice options show the intended values.

What JSON Structure Does the PDF Importer Accept?

The most reliable structure is an object with a fields array. Every entry uses its internal form field name and a value. A simple dictionary of field names to values also works. The importer matches exact field names, so visible labels may differ from the names embedded in the document. JSON does not create new fields.

Supported Types of Fillable PDF Fields

Standard AcroForm text fields, checkboxes, radio button groups, dropdowns and option lists can be populated when their stored values are compatible with the document. Signatures, push buttons, dynamic XFA forms and images of paper forms are excluded. Unsupported options are reported in the preview instead of silently inventing a selection.

Why Some Imported Fields Are Skipped

A form designer can use internal identifiers such as contact.phone or applicant.address. Those identifiers must match names in the JSON data. Choice controls may require an exact permitted option. If a PDF has been flattened or scanned, it no longer has ordinary editable fields and cannot be populated by matching AcroForm identifiers.

Should You Flatten the Filled PDF?

Flattening can prevent users from changing filled values and may improve appearance in some readers, but it also permanently removes standard form editing. Leave flattening off if recipients need to amend answers or continue filling the form. Make a separate copy of the original PDF and JSON input so the data can be reprocessed later.

Privacy and Compatibility Notes

The PDF and JSON are handled in your own browser after the open-source JavaScript PDF library loads. No paid backend or API key is required. Complex fonts, passwords, digital signatures, unsupported appearance streams and very large forms can need specialized desktop software. Do not rely on a filled PDF as proof of identity or a valid cryptographic signature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fill a PDF form automatically using JSON?

Yes, for standard AcroForm PDFs with field names matching the supplied JSON keys.

Can I import a CSV file directly?

Not in this version. Export JSON from PDF Form Data Extractor to preserve field names and values.

What happens if a JSON field is not in the PDF?

It is ignored; only matching existing interactive fields can be updated.

Does it work on scanned forms or XFA documents?

No. A scanned page is an image and dynamic XFA forms are not standard AcroForm fields.

Do I need to pay or submit files to a server?

No paid API or API key is required. Processing runs in the browser.
