PDF Bookmark Exporter: Step-by-Step Guide
Read a PDF’s existing outline tree, including nested bookmark titles and page destinations, and export it to JSON, CSV or plain text. This free PDF tool targets a specific document task rather than offering an unrelated bundle of features. Processing occurs locally after the JavaScript libraries load.

How to Extract PDF Bookmarks Online
Upload a PDF that already includes bookmarks, sometimes called an outline or navigation pane. Choose JSON, CSV or TXT under Tool Settings, then click Extract Bookmarks. The viewer traverses the outline tree and lists bookmark titles, nesting levels and page targets when they can be resolved. Download the report for documentation, content inventories or migration work.
What Is a PDF Outline?
The PDF outline is a set of clickable navigation entries, typically displayed in the left panel of a PDF reader. It is separate from headings printed on the page and separate from an ordinary table of contents. If the author never created bookmarks, there may be nothing to export even when the document visibly contains chapter titles.
JSON, CSV and TXT Export Differences
JSON retains the hierarchy and offers the most complete representation for custom workflows. CSV provides one row per bookmark with a nesting-depth column, so it works well in a spreadsheet. Plain text indents child entries to show the outline structure. Destination page numbers are calculated only when a bookmark points to an identifiable page of the current PDF.
When Bookmark Destinations Cannot Be Resolved
Some outlines link to external URLs, remote documents or named destinations that do not map cleanly to a page. Those bookmarks are still reported where possible, but their page number can be blank. The exporter does not edit, rewrite or remove existing bookmarks. Use the PDF bookmark editor if you need to change the actual PDF.
Common Reasons to Export Bookmarks
Archive the chapter structure of a technical manual, inspect navigation quality before publishing a report, compare multiple PDF editions, build a contents checklist, or transfer a complex outline into a spreadsheet for review. A bookmarked PDF often improves reader navigation, but it does not guarantee that the visible document has accessible headings.
Privacy and PDF Processing
The selected PDF is read on your device by an open-source JavaScript PDF reader. The tool needs no paid conversion endpoint or API key. It does not send your PDF to our document-processing server. Avoid processing documents on a shared computer if the bookmark titles disclose sensitive information.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I export nested PDF bookmarks?
Yes. Parent and child bookmark nesting is preserved in JSON and represented by a depth column in CSV.
Why does my PDF return no bookmarks?
The PDF may contain a printed table of contents but no embedded outline entries. This exporter reads actual PDF bookmarks, not headings found by OCR.
Can it export bookmark page numbers?
For internal destinations that map to pages in the same PDF, yes. External links and unsupported destinations may have no page number.
Does this change the PDF file?
No. This tool only extracts a report. It does not modify or overwrite the source PDF.
